Lets face it... all puppies
are adorable and no matter
what our dog looks like, he/she
is ours and we love him/her
completely. This love happens
when we have cared for and
nurtured them since
puppyhood or we have taken
on the responsibility of giving
an older dog the best home
possible,
and the more we get acquainted with the dog in our life, the more we get
to see the unique personality and cute little ways that only this dog can
possess.
But occassionally there
comes along that very special dog
that you recognize as having 'all
the right stuff' and thats when you
decide to show him/her in a dog
show.
Thats how we felt about
Nugget. We knew he had some
good genes behind him and we were
planning to have him sire puppies
for us but we really wanted to see
what others thought of him.The best
place for that is at a dog show. So
we began by getting Nugget out
among
our friends and relatives and then out among the public. What we dis-
covered was that he was extremely SHY. He wouldn't even look US in
the eye and when a 'stranger' came along... Nugget wanted to be as far
away as possible. No amount of treats could persuade him to 'smile' and
be debonair.
So how were we going to show this
dog that wouldn't even come out from
'between our legs'? Well, we took him
to a few handling classes. After the first
class I really thought he would never
get his tail up and that he would be a
shy guy for the rest of his life. I had all
but ruled him out as a show dog. But
then something started happening... he
became accustomed to seeing the other
dogs and he got used to the kind people
who petted him and felt his body
We couldn't believe the
complete transformation. No longer a
shy guy, he thoroughly enjoys
meeting the public and seems to have
developed a new level of self esteem.
and he didn't even mind
them looking in his mouth
to check his teeth. Soon his
tail was up when we walked
around the ring and he was
standing tall and proud on
the table to be examined.
PLUS, he was starting to
win...
Nugget soon recognized
when we were headed for a show
and he would get excited. One of
his favorite things to do at the
show venue is to walk around on
his show lead. Oh sure, he takes a
wide circle around some of the
bigger breeds but he enjoys
checking out all the comings and
goings of the show.
Judges liked not only how he looked but also his quiet and sweet nature.
So If you've ever wondered if the show dogs enjoy the life of a
celebrity? REST assured that they do. They love all the time and
attention they get from their 'humans'. They love all the grooming
because they are feeling your hands and they know they look good.
They receive the best of foods, the best of health services, the best
grooming products... Yep, a show dogs life is a pretty good life.
Just ask Nugget!
In fact we are proud to say
that at the Pictou County
Kennel Club dog show in
April, Nugget won the Best In
Breed over a 'specials', giving
him the last points needed to
make him a CANADIAN
CHAMPION!!
