In July 2006 this was Brutus,
A couple weeks
later his brothers
had grown
considerably more
than he had.
By the time his
mother was ready
to wean her boys,
Brutus was still
too small to eat on
his own so...
...we let him visit with
Oreo who had one very
fat puppy and lots of
milk to share. The
minute Oreo saw
Brutus she rolled over
and invited him to
nurse. After a little
sniffing around he
accepted the invitation,
and for the next few
weeks Oreo had two
babies, Darcy had a
new brother who
encouraged him to get
up and get playing,
while Brutus had all the
warm milk he wanted
and a cute puppy to
snuggle with.
Then, Oreo was ready to wean her pup
and Brutus... well... he was still so small
so we put him in with another new
Mom, Honey Bun and her boy Xedo.
Honey Bun thought he was getting a
little old for this but she allowed him to
nurse for a few days. Meanwhile little
Xedo loved the romping and playing.
We noticed that although Brutus wasn't
nursing as much he still kept going to
this new home because he was delighted
to attend to another tiny pup...
...And so we discovered that
with every new litter born,
Brutus wanted to be with
the new pups. We found he
was excellent in washing and
encouraging the pups to do
their bathroom duties, (just
like the moms would do for
them). He would keep guard
over them and make sure
they stayed within the nest
and he would curl up around
them to keep them warm as
they slept. As they got older
he would play with them
and roll onto his back for
them to crawl on him.
Even when the pups
got bigger than him,
Brutus would be
keeping an eye on
them and taking his
nap with them.
And so it goes...with each new litter, as soon as the new mom is comfortable with him, Brutus comes in and starts cleaning their ears and checking their bums. He nuzzles them with his nose and teaches them to play. He is very gentle and patient and has never caused one to cry or yelp. We just call him the "BABYSITTER"!
